Covid has brought bereavement to the fore, raising questions about how a society confronts grief on such a huge scale.
In this discussion, Professor Stephen Barclay, GP Dr Dan Knights and grief podcaster Amber Jeffrey will talk about the impact of bereavement on society at large and changing attitudes to how the medical profession should respond and the kind of support needed in the community. Chaired by Dr Laura Davies, founder of the A Good Death? project.
Professor Stephen Barclay works clinically in General Practice and as a hospice Honorary Consultant. He is Associate Professor at Cambridge and Honorary Professor at the University of East Anglia. He leads the Cambridge Palliative and End of Life Care Group and the teaching of Palliative Care in the Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine. He is Clinical Lead for Palliative and End of Life Care (PEOLC) for the Cambridge and Peterborough Integrated Care System and is Clinical Lead for the NHS East of England Strategic Clinical Network for PEOLC.
Dr Dan Knights is a former Cambridge medical student who is now a GP registrar in London, hospice specialty doctor in Peterborough and has recently returned to the university as an Addenbrookes Charitable Trust Clinical Research Fellow with the Cambridge Palliative and End of Life Care Group. He is researching the role of non-professionals and peers in bereavement support and how these initiatives link with primary care.
Amber Jeffrey created The Grief Gang Instagram page and podcast three years after her mum’s untimely death from a heart attack in 2016, when Amber was just 19. She went in search of a place, a voice that resonated with how she felt and in which she could be seen in her grief, but didn’t have any luck in her quest. Amber decided that if she couldn’t find that voice, she would become that voice. The strapline of Amber’s podcast is, ‘Welcome to the gang…the one you never asked to be a part of.’
